The Salmonella typhi bacteria is usually found in human waste (urine or fecal matter). You obtain typhoid upon ingesting water, food or milk that has been in contact with someone sick with typhoid's waste or a carrier's waste. Carriers, as said in the Infectious Agent page are people who have recovered from typhoid fever but continue to spread the bacteria in their waste. Typhoid fever is only spread through the ingestion of the Salmonella typhi bacteria, not through close contact or through the air.
